Mistakes - DOH! It’s All About Making a Conscious Choice of Perspective

Having just returned from a 5-day road trip vacation to Glacier National Park, I’ve been contemplating the concept of mistakes.  Why? Because, boy howdy, did we encounter a ton of those in that five days! And there have even been some mistakes since coming home – Holy cow!

These mistakes range from the minor to the ridiculous, as these may illustrate:

Mistake 1: requesting a lower floor for our first night’s lodging, which was at a mountaintop ski lodge.  Our ‘view’ was of a dirt path and pedestrian bridge - on a mountaintop! - and the lodge was fully booked, so no option to change rooms.

Mistake 2: refusing to backtrack our original entry point to Sandpoint and getting nowhere fast, literally going in circles. And mistake 2a: squabbling with each other about it the entire time.

Mistake 3: a deluded idea that our black convertible would remain shiny and bright throughout the trip. We stayed at a real ranch while in Montana as a wonderfully adventurous thing to do, yet the roads in and out were gravel and dusty. And several highways along our route were being resurfaced, some with miles and miles of nothing but dirt & gravel to drive across. Needless to say, our Mercedes is NOT an off-road vehicle, but what was I thinking to hold this unreasonable belief?!!?

Both during and upon reflection of these mistakes, in the first few days I noticed that my first reaction was feeling ‘victimized’ by the circumstances. My reaction was to fill the air around me with expletives and lamentations of frustration and disappointment. As our trip progressed, I noticed with each mile and each ‘mistake’, my reactions began to be less as ‘victim’. Instead, I became more  ‘surprised participant’, which means I took a step back, after an initial expletive of course :>), and simply marveled at the turn of events. By the time we were on the road back home, my reactions had become more of a curious observer and grateful learner.

What turned the ship around for me was to recognize who I was in those frustration moments. She is not who I truly am at my core: a compassionate and caring individual who appreciates the beauty of Nature and the diverse spirit of humanity. I realized that my initial reactions were those of an entitled brat pitching a temper tantrum because the world wasn’t conforming to me as its center, its be all and end all…yikes!

So I’ve chosen to take on my relationship with mistakes so that I can continue making conscious choices of the perspective from which I engage with a situation, person or mistake. Here’s the learning I’ve gained so far from those mistakes I described earlier:
Learning from Mistake 1: let go of trying to control my circumstances too tightly beforehand, and purposely remain open, spontaneous, and flexible with what I encounter. My intention is to ‘go with the flow’ and engage with it as an adventure in trusting that what shows up has a purpose behind it. I’m defining it as a ‘treasure hunt’ with only a sketchy map and trust that I can find the gold in it!

Learning from Mistake 2: I truly am more stubborn than a mule at times, which I’ve not truly seen as I experienced it last week. I’ve  rationalized it to myself with thoughts like, ‘it’s in my DNA – the Russells (the paternal side of my family) are a truly stubborn clan’, or ‘I’m a Capricorn, and its symbol is the goat, a creature renowned for its stubbornness, so it’s just my nature’. Now I get it in my bones that I can CHOOSE to operate beyond my DNA or astrological sign’s nature :>) – what a concept, eh? Since this is a lifelong delusion, I’m paying special attention to it, and boy is my hubby happy about that!

Learning from Mistake 3: get this stick outta my butt! Relax and just enjoy the scenery, the wind in my hair, the sun on my face, and the purr of the engine in our sexy little sports car – ah…what could be better? So what if the car needs a wash every day and gets dirty almost immediately? I’ll no longer allow dust, mud or whatever to rob my enjoyment of this car. It’s a dream come true for me, something long on my vision board and made a reality a few years back, so I’ll just enjoy it - sheesh!

Thus, the bottom line for me is that my reflections have supported my clarity - and illuminated different choices - in this time of ‘Consolidation & Priorities’, as our Energy Soup Report indicates. I’m ‘consolidating’ by releasing excess control and unreasonable expectations. I’m ‘prioritizing’ by making compassion for self & others my first reaction, which eases my feelings of frustration and disappointment.

I’m saying, ‘Yes,’ to this Leo New Moon’s cosmic still point to make different choices and thereby perceive new possibilities. I choose to ‘be truly lion-hearted’ and ‘live [my] highest truth, acting from love, for love, and with love.’ I’m committed to making interesting, amazing, glorious, and fantastic mistakes!

How about you? What is your relationship to making mistakes? What are you committed to about being lion-hearted to live your highest truth?

I invite you to consider these questions and, as you do, notice what new awareness emerges from within you. And please remember to have FUN on that awareness adventure into the question, okay?

Happy exploring!

Since we’re all inextricably interconnected to each other, our planet, and our universe, here are some of the energies we’re all swimming in together right now:

New Moon - Aug 14th 7:53 AM PDT [Pacific Daylight Time] - New moons are optimal times to set new intentions. The conjunction of the Sun and Moon generates a cosmic still point, where we can more easily recall our soul’s objectives and perceive new possibilities.

The Power Path ~ New Moon is Friday, August 14 at 8:53 AM MDT (Mountain Daylight Time). This new moon is supportive of bringing pieces together to make a whole. Like working on a puzzle where you don’t know where a piece fits until you try it, this is a time to see what pieces fit. If they don’t fit, they are excess. If they do, make a place for them so they can become part of the whole. This is also a way to observe your priorities. The pieces that fit nicely are the ones that will continue supporting you on your true path. The ones that do not fit are distractions, connected to something old and unimportant, or belong to someone else.
Stephanie Austin, EcoAstology ~ In Leo, this new moon reveals where we are ready for more love, creativity, and joy in our lives. The archetype of Leo represents the journey of Self-discovery…Every one of us is a unique individual, with a singular window on the world and a distinct set of talents to offer. Leo is symbolized by the Lion; as the metaphoric King of the Jungle, Leo signifies our quest to become a conscious ruler of our reality. The tragic slaughter of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe last month and the worldwide outrage that followed hopefully signals a turning point for humanity, from the love of power to the power of love. To be truly lionhearted is to have the courage to live one’s highest truth, acting from love, for love, and with love. Who were you born to be? What makes your heart sing? Where could you be more adventurous, artistic, and authentic?
Cosmic*Intelligence*Agency ~ New Moon at 22 degrees Leo…Intention Activation…Essence of Leo – Element FIRE, Masculine, Action Realm…Dynamic…Passionate…Authentically Powerful…Radiant…Stand in your power and allow others to do the same…Use your personal power effectively to empower your life & others
Madeline Gerwick, Business Astrologer, Polaris Business Guides ~ What’s getting started at the New Moon early on August 14th is a desire to take new paths to solve challenging financial issues…One cycle that helps this is related to good communications with powerful people. This cycle can also suggest the ability to get to the bottom of what’s happening, and the underlying motivations, so issues can be resolved quickly. Unexpected love can show up as well with this cycle (Venus trine Uranus). This time it may be a past love that shows up. Typically money and love come and go together. So if one shows up, the other one usually does too. That cycle peaks on August 19th, and due to the retrograde, it stays in range through October 2nd. It peaks for the last time late on September 22nd. There’s still confusion in the stock markets, so the markets may be up one day and down the next. At least it’s trying to recover, but it’s questionable how much headway it can make. The good news for stocks is that technology and internet stocks seem to do well. This is also a time to be cautious with physical activities. A cycle related to wounds, pulled or sprained muscles, and other types of injuries is strong at the New Moon. This cycle can also suggest a lowered immune system, or overtaxed adrenals. This cycle comes in range the day before on August 13th. It peaks on August 16th and is in range through August 19th.

Jul 26-Aug 22 is the “Magnetic Moon [Month] of Purpose” according to the Galactic Calendar - its energies are Unify-Attract-Purpose: “I am One with the Earth. The Earth and myself are One Mind.”~José Argülles

August Theme - Consolidation & Priorities –

Lena & Jose Stevens - The Power Path ~ This month is about getting grounded, organized and practical. It is about choosing wisely how and when to gather support and where and into what to put your energy…We chose the theme of CONSOLIDATION because consolidating the scatter, chaos, new ideas and the “too many things on your plate” is the key to setting you up for a supportive and balanced life…CONSOLIDATION requires getting rid of excess. Some of this excess is not anything definable but rather energetic information both useful and non-useful that has been collected and stored in the energy system waiting for integration. Too much psychic information can feel like a burden; overwhelming, unfocused and irritating…PRIORITIES need a clear space to settle into. So clear some space, consolidate your energetic resources and allow what’s important to prioritize itself in your life.

August 23-31: The energy shifts here into something that is less fiery and more balanced supporting a new flow of priorities and synchronicity in your life. This is also a time of trusting that all is as it should be even if you doubt how some things are falling into place.
Your mind may not always understand the greater picture and plan that spirit has for you. But as long as you have been mindful about eliminating your excess, consolidating your energy and making space for your true priorities, you can trust that all is as it should be.

Ongoing ‘Energy Soup’

Venus Retrograde - Jul 25-Sep 6 - Stephanie Austin, EcoAstrology - Venus retrograde summons us to bring more beauty and balance into our lives, especially with regard to our relationships, finances, and creative pursuits. Venus retrogrades for six weeks every 18 months, urging us to reflect on our values, what makes us happy, and what we might be missing. This is an excellent time to heal old heartbreaks, take care of unfinished business, and make more room in your life for things that bring you joy. What have you always wanted to do? What would help heal and open your heart? What do you need to accept, forgive, and/or release?

Uranus Retrograde - Jul 26-Dec 25 - Stephanie Austin, EcoAstrology - Uranus highlights where we need to break old patterns and make a radical shift; use its retrograde phase to explore alternatives. Where do you need to be more independent and innovative? Where do you need to take a leap of faith? Uranus reminds us that in order for things to change, we have to change.
