Taking Risks & Responsibility – Lessons to be Gleaned from a Super Bowl game
Adventures in Awareness Issue #1
“The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses…The gift of life is yours; it is an amazing journey; and you alone are responsible for the quality of it.” - Dan Zadra, author
“On the bus this morning, pondering about Seahawks and the game yesterday. Contemplating what might I learn from it …. I heard on the radio on the way to Park&Ride: Pete Carroll said the call/decision was his, Russell Wilson said the call was ultimately his, and the offensive coordinator said it was his. It struck me how each took the ownership of decision of the final play. To me it is a testimony of the character and integrity of the team. It would have been easy to blame others, or to doubt yourself, ‘if only …’ We were heartbroken last night, being so close to championship. (Why did they make that call? Why not give the ball to Lynch, … Etc) As spectators, easy for us to say those things.
The game, like the game of life is unpredictable. What does it mean to me to set my intention, to create the strategy, to make the plan and to execute diligently, to be clear with others of what we are doing, ….and things might turn out differently.
My realization this morning is this: What is important is to be intentional and deliberate every step of the way, to be clear with myself and others of what it is that I am doing and the reasoning behind it. The outcome might turn out to be different than what we’d thought. When that happens, how can I (we) learn from it, not from a place of blame or doubt, but from a place of gratitude.”
Yes, the Seattle Seahawks losing the Super Bowl game was disappointing, yet I thought both teams played well and the Hawks leadership (Carroll, Wilson & the Offensive Coordinator) are modeling taking responsibility and demonstrating what taking a risk can look like. While it didn’t pay off in winning the game, it was a risk they thought was worth taking in those last seconds of the game…I believe the integrity being modeled is greater than the glory of the Super Bowl trophy and rings…what do you think?
A QUESTION FOR YOU TO ASK YOURSELF:
What is my responsibility in taking risks that are outside my comfort zone or the widely accepted ‘norm’?
I invite you to consider this question and, as you do, notice what new awareness emerges from within you. And please remember to have FUN on that adventure into the question, okay?
Happy exploring!
