Vulnerability & Openness – A Compassionate Connection to Personal Power
Adventures in Awareness Issue #4
“If people work together in an open way with porous boundaries - that is, if they listen to each other and really talk to each other - then they are bound to trade ideas that are mutual to each other and be influenced by each other. That mutual influence and open system of working creates collaboration.” - Richard Thomas, actor (13 Jun 1951- )
One of the places in my own life that I tend to play it safe is in wearing one of my wigs whenever I’m in the public eye, having lost my hair to chemotherapy four years ago. In my defense (wink, wink), I am a 4 on the Enneagram - the Romantic - which means, in part, that beauty and aesthetics are very important to my well-being. And a sign of my own growth is that after much resistance I’ve finally embraced the joy and ease of getting ready for my day in minimal time by simply plopping what my husband calls my ‘wig-hat’ onto my mostly bald head!
As you’ll notice from the ‘energy soup’ information below, we’re in a time of re-examining our true motives, reclaiming personal power and thinking differently about how we can choose to interact with one another in more compassionate and respectful ways. We’re being called to rethink our collective values as well as re-evaluating the areas and processes of human interactions that deserve our attention personally, locally and globally.
The recent conversations and ongoing controversy that arose from the comments made earlier this month on Fashion Police after the Oscars is a timely example of the pain and disrespect that non-openness and non-compassion perpetuates. As Fate would have it, I’ve discovered a fashion website that is taking a much different approach to fashion and beauty, StyleLikeU. Its founders, Elisa and Lily, have launched a project they’re calling “What’s Underneath,” and I was quite moved by the video of a young model named Melanie Gaydos I found there. This young woman’s story and engaging personal presence demonstrate the power of vulnerability and openness that can connect us in compassion and openness when our heart speaks.
I felt ashamed as I remembered various times in my life that I’ve reacted to someone whose appearance is outside the parameters of socially-acceptable beauty. As she describes the affects on her of these reactions, I’m keenly aware of the arrogance, dismissal and lack of compassion that my behavior demonstrated. With that awareness comes my renewed commitment to continue ‘exploding outward the boundaries of what is achievable…’ (please see quote in the sidebar) regarding my own capacity for compassion and willingness to be vulnerable.
Melanie completely embodies the concept of reclaiming personal power and provides a shining example of being ‘comfortable in her own skin.’ More importantly, she demonstrates a grace-filled acceptance of the painful journey that has brought her to who she is today and humbly radiates her bravery in not letting that pain define her or keep her silent or invisible.
FOR CONTEMPLATION:
I offer you the link to this video without further words as an invitation for you to notice what it might spotlight for you about your own willingness to be vulnerable, compassionate and open with another human being.
You may want to have a tissue box handy…

THE ENERGY SOUP REPORT:
Since we’re all inextricably interconnected to each other, our planet, and our universe, here are some of the energies we’re all swimming in together right now:
Saturn Retrograde-Time to Reorganize - Mar 14 - Aug 2 2015
Madeline Gerwick, Business Astrologer, Polaris Business Guides –
On March 14th, the planet Saturn, which represents all forms of structures, processes, organizations, responsibilities and limitations, begins moving backwards (retrograde). It continues to move backwards until August 1st or 2nd, depending on your time zone. This gives us plenty of time to reorganize areas and processes that need our attention.
Spring Equinox Super Moon Total Solar Eclipse- Mar 20th Equinox: 3:45 AM PDT; Eclipse: 12:45 AM PDT: Eugenia Oganova, Metaphysical Spirituality Teachings - This Solar Eclipse is to ‘reboot’ the planetary matrix into the next phase of human evolution…and on the personal level, it is an opportunity for each of us to re-set our systems…
March Theme - POWER - The Power Path –
One of the catch phrases of the month is “power it up!” Think of yourself as a piece of equipment that has been left on idle or without fuel for a time. We all have intentions and dreams that are “waiting for right timing”. This is the right timing for some of those “what if’s” to get some ignition and power up with the right combination of fuel. The fuel in this case is the power from energy sources that can be tapped and received. The equinox is always a time of restart, renewal and setting up a good container for how you wish to show up. When you have a new moon at the same time, there is even a more powerful opportunity to anchor something new. When there is an eclipse, it intensifies everything. So be careful what you ask for and how you ask for it. Make sure you are not unconsciously asking for something you don’t really want.
Mar 7-Apr 3 is the “Solar Moon of Intention” according to the Mayan Natural Time Calendar - its energies are Pulse-Realize-Intention: “I am the mysterious potential of the future, already in bloom.”
